What a joy it was to connect with so many of you during our inaugural Zoom session as we prepare to embark on our collective exploration of Geeta Iyengar’s transformative text, “Yoga: A Gem for Women.” The energy, enthusiasm, and wisdom shared in our virtual space has set a beautiful foundation for the journey ahead.

Creating Connection Across Distances

Our gathering brought together practitioners from across the globe—representing our diverse community that spans North America, Europe, South Asia, the Middle East, Australia, Africa, and Latin America. From experienced yoga teachers to dedicated practitioners, we came together united by our passion for yoga and intellectual exploration.

I was deeply moved by your responses to our opening question: “In one word or a short phrase, what does yoga mean to you as a woman?” The rich tapestry of answers reflected both personal journeys and universal experiences that will undoubtedly enrich our exploration of Geeta’s text.

Why This Book Matters

As we discussed during our session, “Yoga: A Gem for Women” stands as a groundbreaking text in yoga literature—the first comprehensive guide specifically addressing women’s unique relationship with yoga practice. Its importance extends beyond mere physical instruction; it boldly challenged the historical misconception that yoga was not intended for women while providing practical solutions for female practitioners across all life stages.

Written by Geeta Iyengar, who transformed her own health through yoga after facing life-threatening illness, the book carries the authority of both personal experience and the Iyengar lineage’s rigorous methodology. What makes this work particularly significant is its balanced approach: maintaining the depth and precision of traditional yoga while addressing contemporary women’s specific physiological needs during menstruation, pregnancy, postpartum recovery, and menopause.

The text bridges Western anatomical understanding with yogic and Ayurvedic perspectives, offering therapeutic applications for women’s health conditions while acknowledging the modern woman’s challenge of balancing professional and domestic responsibilities.

Our Roadmap Through the Text

During our session, we explored our comprehensive roadmap through “Yoga: A Gem for Women,” structured into eight thematic units:

  1. Unit One: Foundations of Yoga – Geeta’s personal story and philosophical frameworks, including the four paths of yoga and Patanjali’s eightfold path.
  2. Unit Two: Women’s Unique Relationship with Yoga – Exploring how yoga engages with the female body and life cycle, from natural physical advantages to major life transitions.
  3. Unit Three: Preparing for Practice – Examining the body through both Ayurvedic and modern medical perspectives, along with ethical principles and practical preparation.
  4. Unit Four: Foundation Poses and Forward Bends – Standing poses and forward bends as essential building blocks, with therapeutic applications for women’s health.
  5. Unit Five: Seated, Supine, and Inverted Poses – Exploring these pose categories as bridges between physical practice and inner stillness, with adaptations for women.
  6. Unit Six: Twists, Backbends, and Rope Support – Understanding these poses’ benefits for women’s physical patterns and stress-related tension.
  7. Unit Seven: Pregnancy Practice and Advanced Poses – Comprehensive guidance for pregnancy yoga and the role of advanced asanas in fostering inner qualities.
  8. Unit Eight: The Bridge to Meditation – Culminating with the subtler dimensions of yoga, from mudras to pranayama and meditation.
